Creating a legacy of success and inspiring numerous women in the aviation and aerospace industry, Women in Aviation International (WAI), which is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, stands at the forefront of encouraging and promoting females in this dynamic and innovative field. I was impressed by this organization, and it motivated me to speak with Nina Biton, co-founder of SoFLY Southern Tropics, the newly established South Florida Chapter of WAI.

“With a dedication to and passion for aviation as our driving forces, we want to make a significant impact and inspire, encourage, and support all women and future generations of female professionals in the aerospace field,” says Nina Biton enthusiastically.
WAI represents a robust community where women from all walks of aviation come together and interact, encompassing talents and ambitions that span the entire spectrum of the industry. They create a unique and diverse tapestry, including astronauts, pilots, lawyers, engineers, maintenance technicians, air traffic controllers, business owners, educators, journalists, flight attendants, high school and college students, airshow performers, airport managers, and others.

Interview with Nina Biton from SoFLY Southern Tropics, WAI:

What motivated you to establish SoFLY Southern Tropics, and what aspirations drive your organization?

I strongly believe in the potential of women in aviation, and that belief drove us to establish SoFLY Southern Tropics. Seeing the contributions of amazing women in this industry and understanding the challenges they often face, we felt compelled to create a Chapter in South Florida. With three international airports, seven general aviation airports, and multiple aviation-related businesses in the area, our goal is to provide a supportive environment where women can thrive, learn, and build successful careers in aviation. We want to make aviation more accessible and attractive to all women and inspire the next generation to join this exciting field, knowing its power to transform the world and lead to new opportunities.

What factors led you to aviation, and why did you choose this field as a career?

Aviation has been my passion ever since I can remember seeing my father in his military pilot uniform and taking me to the airfield with him. I still vividly remember the smell of aviation fuel, the sound of planes taking off, and the feeling of freedom they conveyed. These memories became my unwavering motivation and inspiration for the aerospace industry as my career and life choice.

Very intriguing! You mentioned that you came to the USA from Ukraine several years ago. Can you tell us how challenging it was to get into aviation without related experience and being in a new country?

It wasn’t easy for me when I came to the States 7 years ago. I have been searching for a job, and then the ad popped up on the position of aircraft parts sales. I was like,, Wow! That sounds like my dream job to have!,, I immediately assumed that would require some experience and serious education, and I lacked both. No matter what, my passion and determination helped me persist and not give up on this goal. I met some powerful women along the way who helped and lifted me, and now I want to pay it forward by example. You are not a true success unless you are helping others to be successful.

What programs and events does SoFly Southern Tropics WAI offer to support women in aviation?

We have a wide range of events and meetups where women can meet, network, learn new things, help each other, and build connections. Additionally, we offer educational programs and scholarships for women and young girls aspiring to receive aviation education. We are now organizing a “Girls in Aviation Day” designed for girls ages 8-18 y.o. to introduce and encourage them to the career possibilities of this unique field. The day will take place on Saturday, August 26, 2023, and is packed with exciting activities and a day full of fun experiences at the FEAM Aero hangar. Our goal is to donate at least 500,000.00 dollars for scholarships and grants by the end of this year.

How can people support and get involved in your work?

We always welcome any support and contributions from anyone! We have male allies at SoFLY who share our passion for aviation and supporting women. You can become a member and gain access to our resources, programs, and events. Also, consider the option of donating to help us continue our mission. Our organization strives to be as accessible and open to all, so feel free to reach us if you have any questions or ideas.
